About the Practice

In 2004, when Dr. Callie Shaffer finished her pediatrics residency at the University of Kentucky, her dream was to move home to Rockcastle County and open a pediatrics practice. She made that dream a reality, and today RockPeds is known as an excellent place to receive care, and it continues to grow with patients from Rockcastle and surrounding communities. More recently RockPeds has welcomed another Rockcastle native to the practice, pediatrician Dr. Sarah Oliver. And we have been very lucky to add two nurse practitioners, Courtney Browning, APRN and Karla Sizemore, APRN to our group of top notch pediatric health care providers. In addition, we have a caring staff who provide excellent care and service to our young patients.

Our Providers

Dr. Callie Shaffer

Dr. Callie Shaffer

Dr. Shaffer grew up in Mount Vernon, attended UK for undergraduate education (1993-1997), UK Medical School (1997-2001), and UK pediatrics residency (2001-2004). There she was recognized as the outstanding resident in the pediatric ICU, general pediatrics, and genetics departments. She was board certified as a fellow in the Academy of Pediatrics in 2004. Dr. Callie, as her patients call her, is married to Mikhael and they have four children, Silas, Celia Marie, Clara Rose, and Corey. She has a special interest in children with genetic disorders and behavioral health. Her hobbies are painting and walking.

Dr. Sarah Oliver

Dr. Sarah Oliver

Dr. Sarah Oliver is a native of Rockcastle County. She earned her medical degree from the University of Kentucky, and completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of South Carolina. She was board certified as a fellow in the Academy of Pediatrics in 2015. Dr. Sarah says her favorite part being a pediatrician is seeing newborns, and helping parents care for their new little ones. Along those lines, she highly recommends “The Period of PURPLE Crying” (www.purplecrying.info), as an excellent resource for families with fussy infants. “Having gone through this struggle myself I found it to be very reassuring and it does a great job of explaining what the little ones are going through and what parents/caregivers can expect,” she says. In her free time, Dr. Sarah and her husband Chase enjoy taking their son James and daughter Norah to new places, like the zoo and the children’s museum.

Courtney Browning

Courtney Browning, APRN

Courtney has wide-ranging experience and training in pediatrics. She worked as a nurse at the Children’s Hospital at the University of Kentucky, and she taught nursing at Eastern Kentucky University. As a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (APRN PPCNP-BC), Courtney has special certification, education and training to work with pediatric patients. Courtney especially enjoys performing well child exams. “I like the opportunity to get to know the families and interact with the kids while they are feeling well. Well child exams are extremely important because they give us the opportunity to screen for developmental problems, and the time to provide education about development and safety for the family.” Courtney and her husband Matt live in Richmond with their daughters Abby and Maddy. As a family, they enjoy camping and hiking and spending time outdoors. They are also active in Vineyard Community Church in Richmond.

Karla Sizemore

Karla Sizemore, APRN

Karla Sizemore joined the RockPeds team in 2017. Although she worked over a decade as a nurse in a hospital setting, when she became a nurse practitioner she decided pediatrics was the place for her. “I love the positive outlook of our patients. And while giving great care to our patients is very serious, you definitely can laugh and have more fun in pediatrics.” Karla and her husband live in Manchester with their daughter. In addition to playing piano, Karla enjoys outdoor activities like archery and bow hunting. She follows UK basketball and Green Bay Packers football. She is a member of Pilgrims Rest Baptist Church in Laurel County.

Our Staff

Teresa Messinger

Teresa Messinger, RMA

Teresa is a Mt. Vernon native who went back to school so that she could work in health care, a career she chose so that she could help people. Since coming to work with us, she has learned that being in pediatrics “makes it double rewarding because I am helping kids!” Something else she has learned since coming to work at RockPeds, is how important well checks are, and she highly recommends these yearly visits for our patients of all ages. Teresa rooms and works with Ms. Courtney’s patients, and at times jumps in to help answer the nurse phone or schedule appointments. Teresa lives in Mt. Vernon with her sons Dakota and Andrew. Her family likes to watch movies, take little road trips, and generally just be together.

Amanda Clark

Amanda Clark, CMA

Amanda started with us as a student, and when her internship was finished, we were lucky that she wanted to continue her career at RockPeds. Amanda rooms and works with Ms. Karla’s patients. She knows that doctor visits can often be scary for kids, and her goal is to make them feel comfortable and explain things to them. Amanda also serves as our Assistant Vaccine Coordinator and helps take care of equipment and supplies in the office. Amanda lives in Paint Lick with her husband Troy and two daughters, Hannah and Hailey. She likes to spend her spare time with her daughters.

Monica Clontz

Monica Clontz, CMA

Monica joined us in 2015, and as the Phone Triage Nurse, she takes care of all the nurse calls that come in to our office. “I want to provide the best care possible!” she says, and along those lines she believes the most important part of her job is taking care of patients’ needs, while also making their parents feel at ease and safe. She and her husband Kevin and their two children Hope and John enjoy getting outside and fishing or hiking, playing board games and going to sporting events.

Nickie Navarre

Nickie Navarre, CMA

Nickie has worked in healthcare for over a decade. Here at RockPeds, she works with Dr. Callie’s patients, who appreciate the calm and positive way she takes care of them. In addition to taking care of patients, a very important part of Nickie’s job is Vaccine Coordinator for the office. In this capacity, Nickie oversees the ordering, storage and safety of all the vital vaccinations we provide our patients. “Vaccinations are so important for our young patients, I’m glad to have a part in keeping our little ones safe from terrible diseases,” she says. Nickie and her husband Kevin are the proud parents of Lydia, Landon and the newest addition to their family, Lincoln Cole. In her spare time, Nickie has coached her daughter’s basketball team, and loves spending time with her family.

Hannah Wilson

Hannah Wilson, CMA

Hannah worked in the medical field for two years before coming to work with us in 2016. Hannah works with Dr. Sarah, and strives to makes her patients as comfortable and make their visit as easy as possible. Hannah lives in Berea with her husband Marcus and her puppy, Shadow though they don't have any kids of their own just yet, they are both blessed with wonderful neices and nephews. She and her husband enjoy spending time with family and travelling.

Janice Craig

Janice Craig

Janice joined RockPeds in 2017 as referral coordinator, after working for over a decade in medical records in the hospital setting. Janice helps our patients by setting them up with specialists, and by getting insurance pre-authorizations when needed. Janice enjoys the challenges of her new position, and working with young patients and their families. We are happy to have her in this important position. In her free time Janice likes to read and watch UK Basketball.

Dianna Crutcher

Dianna Crutcher

Chances are, if you have ever scheduled an appointment at RockPeds, you’ve talked to Dianna, who says the favorite part of her job is “helping a worried, stressed parent get an appointment for their child.” Dianna’s many years of experience at RockPeds make her a valuable resource for parents. She is also very artistic, and she painted the serene hot air balloon art that you see when you check in at registration. Dianna and her husband Doug have two children, Landon and Leigha, and together their family enjoys game nights, swimming, bonfires, and cook-outs. She also enjoys painting and crafting with her daughter Leigha.

Helen Mullens

Helen Mullins

Helen has been our receptionist since the day we opened in 2004. Needless to say, she knows almost all our patients and their families by name, and has watched many of them grow into adults over the decade-plus that she has worked here. Helen’s motto is “treat others the way you would like to be treated,” and that comes through in the way she welcomes patients with a smile or a word of encouragement. Helen is a native of Jackson County, and she is married to Robert Kelly Mullins. They have two adult sons, and one precious granddaughter, Cailee. Helen enjoys attending church, reading, and walking. She and her family like to spend time outdoors fishing, at dirt track races, and searching for Kentucky agate.

Joy Reynolds

Joy Reynolds

When Joy joined us in 2014 as a receptionist, she brought a great deal of medical office experience to our team, and she has the happy outlook that comes from working with our young patients. She enjoys seeing the new babies who come into the clinic, and watching them grow over the months and years as they come in for well checks and other visits. Joy and her husband Rick cherish every minute they get to visit with their two grown children and three grandchildren Kyndel, Brooklyn and Leighton. In her spare time, Joy also likes to go out to eat with her husband, play piano, and read.
